26 November 2019, 09:00-11:30 (Breakfast from 08:00)
Institute of Directors, Pall Mall, London
Global warming is the biggest environmental challenge that we face today. The built environment is a major contributor, accounting for around 40% of the UK’s total carbon footprint.
Since the UK Government announced a net zero emissions target by 2050, it is evident that those investing in and managing real estate have started to rethink their sustainability programmes. However, we now need to see accelerated action and an industry-wide commitment to make it happen.
Our forthcoming seminar ‘The role of real estate in achieving net zero’ will explore the steps real estate professionals can start taking now in their journey towards a net zero carbon built environment, addressing carbon emissions from both building construction and operational use.
Simon Sturgis, adviser to the UKGBC, RICS, RIBA and the BCO, and author of ‘Targeting Zero: Embodied and Whole Life Carbon Explained’, will discuss reducing carbon emissions through better building design, low carbon material choices, resource efficiency and circular economic strategies.
James Brabben, from the award winning management consultancy Cornwall Insights, will explore how the landscape for energy procurement is changing, the imperatives for businesses to better manage their consumption through efficiency or behind the meter generation, and the increasing popularity of direct procurement through Corporate PPAs.
Given that building structures last longer than the plant within them, Joanne Merry from Carbonxgen will address how real estate professionals can seize this opportunity to turn operational buildings into more efficient, sustainable versions over time by taking advantage of the latest advancements in building technologies.
This will be followed by a panel debate providing an opportunity to ask any burning questions on the role of real estate in achieving net zero.
