The UK Government has confirmed that their net zero strategy will be released prior to the COP26 conference, which is scheduled to take place in November next year.
The announcement was made by government ministers, Alok Sharma and Kwasi Kwarteng, in their response to the Committee on Climate Change’s progress report, which was released in June. The report had stated that the global pandemic represented a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” and any economic recovery plans must support the transition to net zero.
The net zero strategy paper will add to an already packed roster of scheduled policy announcements, which includes the much anticipated energy white paper and strategy proposals dealing with the de-carbonisation of buildings and transportation.
According to the announcement, the strategy paper “will set out the Government’s vision for transitioning to a net zero economy, making the most of new growth and employment opportunities across the UK. These will raise ambition as we outline our path to hit our 2050 target.”
